Football 2010: Sectional Finals Preview

Quick update: The Northwest Indiana Sports Blog was 8-0 in its Week 11 predictions, 7-1 on calling the spread. The blog is now 154-38 overall and 90-96-6 calling the spread this season.

Class 5A Sectional 1:
#4 Crown Point (8-3) at #1 Valparaiso (11-0)
Valpo played perhaps its defensive game of the year when the Vikings held off the Bulldogs, 10-7, at Viking Field in Week 6. Crown Point is six points away from being 10-1, but is also very lucky to be alive after a Hail Mary pass on the final play to beat Portage, 23-21, in the sectional opener. Valpo has been impressive all year, but certainly hasn’t blown everyone out. This could be a very good game, and if the Bulldogs bring their A game, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they pulled the upset. But Valpo has passed every test so far, and there’s no reason to think the Vikings won’t move on to the regional.
NWI Sports Blog Prediction: Valparaiso 17, Crown Point 10.

Class 4A Sectional 9:
Gary West Side (6-5) at #3 Hammond Morton (10-1)
It is impossible to say enough about the job that Coach Alexander Pratt has done at his alma mater West Side, and the Cougars won the games they were supposed to win to reach the final. But there is absolutely no way they take down Morton, the Region’s top 4A program this year. Morton dominated when these two teams played in Week 7; expect more of the same Friday.
NWI Sports Blog Prediction: Hammond Morton 54, Gary West Side 14.

Class 3A Sectional 17:
John Glenn (9-2) at #10 Andrean (8-3)
If you look at the records, this should be a good game. If you look at reality, it probably won’t. John Glenn doesn’t play anything near the schedule Andrean does, although the Falcons do face off against Jimtown — and lose to Jimtown — every year in the Northern State Conference. Andrean, conversely, is a couple of back-to-back overtime losses away from being Northwest Crossroads Conference champions — in a league in which the Andrean is the smallest school and only 3A team. This should not be an even contest.
NWI Sports Blog Prediction: Andrean 35, John Glenn 21.

Class 2A Sectional 25:
#5 Wheeler (11-0) at Rensselaer (11-0)
Last year, unbeaten Wheeler headed down to Rensselaer for the sectional final and gave the Bombers a whale of a game, losing 21-18. This year, Rensselaer is also undefeated, and the Bombers play — by far — a superior schedule, having beaten defending 3A state champ West Lafayette and 1A powerhouse Sheridan. Wheeler’s kids haven’t had to fight off a fourth-quarter challenge since their opener, a surprisingly tough 32-29 win over Highland (who finished 1-9). Attrition will separate Rensselaer from Wheeler in this one.
NWI Sports Blog Prediction: Rensselaer 28, Wheeler 20.

Class A Sectional 33:
South Central (9-2) at Culver (8-3)
The Satellites, who have scored 99 points in two sectional victories, stand on the cusp of their first sectional football championship, and they are playing like monsters right now. Defending champion Culver handed South Central one of its two losses by the barest of margins, 21-20, in Week 2. Culver has definitely played a stronger schedule, and in fact, all three of its losses came at the hands of Class 3A schools (Jimtown, John Glenn, Knox). So Culver won’t go down easily, but South Central is on a mission.
NWI Sports Blog Prediction: South Central 27, Culver 20.
